Session Information

In January 2010, whilst on tour in Australia with Them Crooked Vultures Dave Grohl conceived a grand plan for the next Foo Fighters studio album and how it would be created. The main aspect of that plan was to record the entire album using classic analog equipment in the garage of his own personal home in Encino, California, rather than at the band's digital Studio 606 facility as they had done the previous two albums.

On March 1st, with a short gap in Them Crooked Vultures touring commitments for Grohl he and the rest of the band convened at the new home studio, along with producer Butch Vig and engineer James Brown, to make some exploratory recordings. Brown set up a Studer A827 24-Track tape recorder with a rack of Neve preamps removed from an old BCM 10 console. Over the course of the day the band recorded three tracks in total, recording each in approximately three hours using 16 of the available 24 tracks according to Brown. "I threw up eight microphones, just to get a feel for what we were gonna be dealing with" he said speaking of the investigative nature of the session.

In May 2010 Grohl tweeted a picture of a recordable CD revealing the titles of the three tracks the band had recorded during these 'March 2010 House Demos'. First of all 'Dear Rosemary' (Listed on the CD as simply 'Rosemary'), a track they would later go on to re-record and release on seventh album 'Wasting Light'. The second track listed on the CD was '7 Corners', a fabled track in Foo Fighters history (and title of this e-book) that to date has not been released despite a version of the song being recorded by the band for every studio album since 1997 according to Grohl.

Talking to Beat Magazine he spoke of the recording of the track again (although not by name) during this session and suggested it may have been the last time they try it. "There was a song that was gonna be on this album that we've been trying to record for thirteen years" he stated, "We kind of thought that if we didn't put it on the record this time then it wouldn't come out". Asked if he wanted it to come out he bluntly replied "No" before changing the subject.

The third track was 'Better Off', like 'Dear Rosemary' recorded properly during the main 'Wasting Light' sessions and released as a bonus track on special editions of the album. The band, producer and engineer were happy with the recording qualities of the test recordings and whilst Grohl went back to play Them Crooked Vultures shows work began to completely prepare the studio for a full recording session later in the year. Details of that session can be found below.
