Session Information

In January 2018 Foo Fighters were back at EastWest Studios in Hollywood for a special project. The band had been invited to perform a track for an upcoming tribute album to T. Rex, an English glam rock band of the late sixties and seventies fronted by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. T. Rex saw huge success in the 1970s with hits such as ‘Ride a White Swan’, ‘Get It On’ and perhaps their most famous track, ‘Children of the Revolution’.

The band was considered one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement, but everything came to a premature end in 1977 with the sudden death of Bolan in a car crash.A tribute album was conceived in mid 2017 by Sony BMG, planning to honor Bolan and the band alongside a visual documentary. Being on the same label, Foo Fighters were approached to contribute and as fans of the band (drummer Taylor Hawkins in particular), they agreed.

As well as all six members of the band guest vocalist Samantha Sidley was also present at recording. Sidley had been recruited by the band a few months previous to participate on their live ‘Concrete And Gold’ tour alongside two other vocalists, helping them to emulate the layered vocal harmonies that had been performed on the record.

The album and documentary were due to be released in the Spring of 2019 but as of 2023 no firm date had been revealed publicly and owing to this the track Foo Fighters performed was still considered confidential information. The unknown song was tracked entirely live in the main room at Studio A, with a very quick and relaxed attitude according to Hawkins - “We had fun. All of us sat in a room together and we just recorded it really quick, and live. We just sat in a room and had fun.”

Grammy award-winning producer Marc Urselli was placed in charge of the session and he later enthused how much he enjoyed the process. “What a pleasure and honor to record these guys,” said Urselli of his first experience with the band. “Great musicians, super nice people, and kick ass rockers.”
