Session Information

Towards the end of March 2003, Dave Grohl joined post-punk veterans Killing Joke at Grandmaster Records in Hollywood, invited along by the band’s leader Jaz Coleman. The pair had met earlier in the year when both Killing Joke and Foo Fighters performed at the Big Day Out Festival in Auckland, New Zealand. Grohl spent around a week with the band at the studio recording drum tracks for their self-titled 11th studio album.

Whilst at the studio Dave undertook a completely different project, recording a new version of the ‘One By One song ‘Times Like These’, produced once again by Nick Raskulinecz. Video director Bill Yukich also joined Grohl at the studio as it was planned to direct a music video around the recording session.

The new version of the song was acoustic, for the most part featuring only vocals and acoustic guitar. One further addition to the track came from the custom Yamaha grand piano at the studio, and whilst Grohl had never learned the instrument, was able to record some simple notes for the song. The recording was completed very quickly with the final mixed and mastered song being added to the footage of the recording shot by Yukich. The video, the third version for the song (Liam Lynch and Mark Klasfield each directed a video for the original recording of the song) was sent to broadcasters and was later released by the band on the 'DVD/EP' video release in September 2003.

After recording this new acoustic version of the song Grohl would begin performing the song in a similar manner in live performance, the first known occurrence being on the KROQ FM Kevin & Bean show on April 3rd, 2003.
