Session Information

In the summer of 1984 Dave Grohl joined his first real band, 'Freak Baby', playing as their second guitarist. Despite enjoying this position in his heart he knew it wasn't the role he truly wanted to fill - drummer.

As with the guitar Grohl received little in the way of professional lessons to play the drums. At his first (and only) lesson his instructor informed him he had gone wrong with the very basics - how to hold the sticks. He had settled on his incorrect technique whilst playing on the rather unconventional drum kit he'd set up in his bedroom.

"The house was pretty small, so we didn't have room to put a drum set anywhere, and I didn't have enough money to get a drum set for myself." Grohl recalled in later years. "But I knew the configuration of a drum set, so I'd set up a pillow between my leg as a snare drum and I'd use my bed as a tom and a chair as a high hat, and I'd just play along with the records all day long, 'til there was sweat dripping from my windows".

Unwilling to pay vast amounts of money to re-learn the 'correct' way to do everything he had taught himself, he instead carried on playing his own way.

At a Freak Baby rehearsal Grohl decided to ask if he could try out on the drums. Ordinarily this might have caused problems in a band but the current drummer, Dave Smith, only really got the position because he owned a drum kit. His real talents were with bass guitar. Current bassist Brian Samuels had gone home and so Grohl jumped behind the kit, Smith grabbed the bass and they started to jam.

The four were happy with how the band now sounded and so original bassist Samuels was effectively kicked out. With a new line-up the group decided they also needed a new name - 'Mission Impossible'.

The new look band played a few live shows locally then headed to Barrett Jones' Laundry Room Studio in early 1985 with the aim of recording some new songs as well as some of their older songs with the new line-up.

Twelve tracks were recorded in total at this session including a cover of their namesake - the theme tune to the TV show 'Mission Impossible'.

The session was recorded onto ¼ inch magnetic tape and the master reels are thought to either be in the possession of a band member or with Barrett Jones, at his current incarnation of the Laundry Room Studio.
