Session Information

In fall 2008 the band went into a studio to record some new songs that they had written over the previous 18 months touring. One of the tracks the band recorded during that session was titled 'Wheels' and on July 4th 2009, Independence Day, the band debuted the song live at a USO Concert on the south lawn of The White House, Washington D.C.. Grohl described the song to the audience as being about "that feeling when the wheels touch the ground" following a flight and the relief you feel when it's over. He also told the crowd that they had recorded the song in the studio and that it was going to be released on a Greatest Hits CD later that year.

The band had in fact been at Studio 606 West in Northridge, California in June recording the song, specifically for the release. 'Word Forward', a track written about the passing of Grohl's lifelong friend Jimmy Swanson in 2008 was also recorded at the session. Producing the session was Butch Vig, the Garbage drummer turned producer who Grohl had last worked with in 1991 on the seminal Nirvana album, Nevermind.

Grohl had bumped into Vig at a party in Los Angeles and with these two tracks in mind, asked him if he wanted to produce the session, an offer Vig felt he couldn't refuse. "We had so much fun doing it" said Vig when asked about the session. After the success of the partnership recording these two tracks and realising they hadn't recorded an album together since 'Nevermind' Grohl asked Vig if he wanted to produce the next Foo Fighters record. Vig again accepted the request and details of that session can be found here.

Both tracks recorded at this session were featured on the Greatest Hits compilation as expected, released in October 2009.
