Session Information

After finishing recording material for third album 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' at Grohl's studio 606 the band along with producer Adam Kasper headed to Conway Recording Studios, a professional state of the art studio in the heart of Hollywood to mix the tracks. Whilst it's believed they originally only went to the studio with the intention of mixing what was recorded in Virginia the band in fact worked on two songs whilst there, recording a completely new song and working on parts of a song already recorded in Virginia.

"We mixed and tracked two songs in L.A. at Conway- 'Live-in Skin' and 'Learn to Fly'" producer Kasper told Mix Magazine in 2000. In promotional interviews around release of the album Grohl also spoke about how the track 'Live-in Skin' came to be recorded at this mixing session - "That one was weird. We were already finished recording and had a couple days off before mixing, and I came up with this riff. I just thought, 'Fuck it. Let's record this', so we recorded it in a day and a half while we were mixing" he recalled. "I thought, 'Wow, this is kind of a cool tune,' and I started writing about the place that the band is in now. You'd have to read the lyrics, but it has a lot to do with me going head-on with my hate and I'm amazed that I'm still standing and I demand that we all blend in, and stuff like that" he added in another interview, describing the song in more detail.

With regards to 'Learn To Fly' It's not entirely clear what exactly they did with the song at this session nor how much was used in the final version of the song. In the 1999 short documentary on the making of the album Grohl can be seen recording vocals for the song at Conway Recording Studios and it is possible only overdubs were recorded at this session.

The liner notes for the album and single release do not help to clear the situation up, noting only that there was 'additional recording' on the track at this second session.

With the extra unplanned recording complete the group then completed the mixing session as planned. Along with 'Live-In Skin' and 'Learn To Fly' twelve tracks recorded at Studio 606 were mixed by Kasper, assisted by John Nelson, using the Solid State Logic SSL9000 console at the studio.

Three songs were later mixed for a second time by Andy Wallace at Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles - 'Learn To Fly', 'Aurora' and 'Live-In Skin'. These were the mixes used for the record although it is however unknown exactly why those three tracks were mixed a second time.

The original Kasper mixes of those three songs were never released and remained unheard until 2011 when 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' was reissued with a 12" Vinyl pressing. Rather than using the original masters created for the Vinyl records pressed in 1999 fresh lacquers were cut for the repressing by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The new lacquers were cut using a master featuring the entire Kasper mix rather than including the three re-mixed tracks as every other version had to date.
