After performing on the same bill at a festival in January 2003 Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman invited Grohl to join the band and record their eleventh studio album. With the band not having a drummer at the time it was planned for several guests to feature on the album including Tool’s Danny Carey and System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan. However, once Grohl had heard the tracks they were working on he was adamant he would do everything.
He joined the band at Grandmaster Recorders in March 2003 and unusually with most of the recording already complete by that point he had the challenge of adding drums last, whereas in his entire musical past he’d always recorded them first. Grohl overcame that hurdle and recorded on all ten songs on the album which was released in July 2013.
