FFL is happy to report that we’ve been cleared of any contractable diseases courtesy of bespectacled Irishmen, so on goes the show with our coverage of the last week in Foo news.

Dave Grohl loses voice again, delays Canadian visit

Foo Fighters announced via social media today that two Canadian dates – September 4 in Edmonton at Rogers Place and September 6 in Calgary at Scotiabank Saddledome – have been postponed due to Dave losing his voice, once again when the band has resumed a tour run. His vocals had been showing signs of strain during their show in Seattle and Dave powered through to finish, but it seems he may have burned the candle at both ends with an order of vocal rest as a result. “That’s the last time I ever make out with Bono,” he quipped in the announcement, a generally sound reflection at any time but also some friendly ribbing of the U2 frontman who’d had to stop a show a few days earlier due to his own voice giving out.

Both dates have been rescheduled for October and tickets purchased for the original dates will be honored.

Nirvana members jam onstage in Seattle

Krist Novoselic and his band Giants in the Trees joined the party as supports for Foo Fighters for the night at Safeco Field in Seattle, so an onstage reunion of the remaining Nirvana bandmates seemed more than likely and in such a fitting locale. In the middle of the main event, Krist returned to the stage and they collectively ripped into The Vaselines’ ‘Molly’s Lips’, a song Nirvana famously covered and put on the Incesticide compilation. In that context, Dave’s deteriorating vocals did the mammoth moment justice as he told the frenzied crowd, “This is an old song, we haven’t done this song together in a long time”.

Earlier, Krist tweeted a photo of himself with Foo Fighters jamming backstage pre-show with the love note: “Thank you ⁦@foofighters⁩ for a great show and always letting me into your wonderful sphere!!!!”.

Virginia Grohl lands in Australia for BIGSOUND

The woman we all wish would adopt us, Dave’s mother Virginia Hanlon Grohl, is currently in Australia as a keynote speaker of the BIGSOUND music industry festival and conference in Queensland. Her seminar will be on Thursday at 11:30am at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts (ticket-holders only), but prior to her appearance, she has been visiting Australian radio and TV media to chat about BIGSOUND and her book (and upcoming docuseries) From Cradle To Stage. The Today Show (Channel Nine) and The Kyle and Jackie O Show (KIIS 1065 Sydney) have already had the pleasure of her company, as well as the Channel Ten news/comedy game show Have You Been Paying Attention?, which had her on as a surprise quizmaster. Her own segment was gatecrashed by her son, who asked a question via pre-recorded video (in the same 202 t-shirt as he wore at the Cal Jam pop-up, leading us to presume it was filmed on the same day) based on a quote from her book about her biggest fear for him pursuing music as a career. Even Ed Kavalee, the master of snark on this panel, melted in her presence!

Chris Shiflett postpones solo show, releases latest Walking The Floor podcast

In the wake of the postponed Foo Fighters shows, Chris went on Twitter to regretfully spread the word that he would have to leave of his own solo acoustic show at The Palomino in Calgary (Canada) to a later time, most likely to coincide with the band’s pending return. At the time of publishing, Chris was considering adding a second show in Edmonton, though nothing has been locked in. Meanwhile, the latest episode of his popular Walking The Floor podcast features a chat with Knoxville artist Ashley Monroe. If you haven’t already subscribed, the podcast is available on iTunes or as a stream via the podcast website.

(Update: The Palomino show has been officially rescheduled to the 24th of October.)
