"We might have a whole new record of fuckin' songs that we just finished the other day," Dave Grohl casually told the crowd at Launceston's UTAS Stadium on January 24, 2026. "I don't know." Adding that he knew when Foo Fighters would return to Australia, and that it would be before his next birthday on January 14, 2027, fans with pattern recognition skills confidently guessed that an announcement would be coming sooner rather than later and started to get psyched. After all, the last time the band did a one-off show in Australia (Geelong, 2022) and Dave said they'd return for a full tour, it was only a matter of days before the news dropped. So fans know these guys aren't going to dangle a carrot for very long before a pay-off.
On February 4, 2026, the first preview of their twelfth studio album was released - kind of. Matching the brief flashes of photos taken at recent live shows and during recording sessions, only about one second of a track was heard at most before dashing into the next one. Thirteen snippets were heard in total, all featuring Dave vocalising at the top of his range (and one in three-part harmony, according to a fan-made isolated version of the video). Every excerpt is highly energetic and roars to announce itself, which has invigorated fans hoping for the band to wild out.
The accompanying images tell more of the story. Besides the live shots, two locations are shown, their own space in the Studio 606 facility as well as Dave's home. All six band members are represented, including a confirmation that new drummer Ilan Rubin participated in the recording - and perhaps not just behind the kit, as he can also be seen wielding a guitar. Likewise, Dave can be seen playing bass. An acoustic guitar is observed in shots, suggesting that it won't be a totally thunderous offering end-to-end. The home studio photos look to be from the same session as what produced 'Today's Song' as the style matches that of photographer Alexis Gross.
For those curious whether 'Asking For A Friend' would be part of a future release, fans identified it as the second-last song in the clips. In addition, although it has not been identified among the audio heard in the teaser, the lyric sheet for 'Today's Song' was shown among the photos. Its apparent omission from the lineup further suggests that it was a standalone single - a rarity in the band's release history, but not the first. Likewise, 'Unconditional' which was played three times on the Everything or Nothing At All Tour and is at the time of posting unreleased has not been found among the excerpts.
Shortly after 'Today's Song' was released, we noted on our Instagram that the number of titles in the band's publishing repertory (a catalog of creative works listing rights ownership and logging plays for royalties) had been increased by thirteen, although no new titles were showing or publicly viewable. Although 'Asking For A Friend' has been out for a few months, it still isn't listed. If it can be assumed that this song will be an album track, twelve more have yet to be revealed and may be the track count for the upcoming album. However, this is not conclusive as final track listings are subject to change (eg. 'Soldier' being left off Concrete and Gold) and more songs tend to be recorded in sessions than what is signed off for release.
The name of the upcoming album has not been confirmed, however as all but one of the band's tours has been named after the album they were promoting, Take Cover is a decent guess at this point. More information can surely be expected within days, as Foo Fighters have been booked to tape an episode of The Graham Norton Show in London on February 19, to air the following day. As for their pending AU/NZ tour announcement, late in the evening after Dave's comments onstage in Launceston, their Australian promoter Frontier Touring published a page with a sign-up form for people to receive updates on to-be-announced dates.
As always, make sure you've signed up to the band's offcial newsletter (so there's no disappointment by missing out on presale codes) and follow Foo Fighters Live on Instagram for updates as they happen!
