Foo Fighters premiered their latest single 'Asking for a Friend' today October 23, 2025, following a short teaser with a snippet of the new music shared to their official social media profiles. Its release officially confirms the song's title, which was discovered via copyright strikes as fans attempted to share the teaser to their own stories.
Co-produced by Oliver Roman and Foo Fighters, the single is also the first to be established as being written and recorded by the new line-up, having added Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails, Angels & Airwaves) as their current drummer. Ilan made his live debut with the band at their first pop-up show in San Luis Obispo on September 13, 2025.
Ilan posted on his own Instagram shortly after the single dropped, expressing pride and excitement in contributing drums to its recording - simultaneously confirming that he was present for the recording session. It is currently unknown when this song was recorded, or whether it was in the same session as that of 'Today's Song'.
Accompanying its release was a letter from Dave Grohl, published on both the official band newsletter and their Substack, Field Notes, in which he wrote of the inspiration and gratitute awaiting him with a view of Mt. Fuji's peak during the band's recent trip to Japan. Renewed and exalted by their return, he expressed that they were "forever devoted" to Foo Fighters and felt the same allegiance from their fans, inviting us to "watch this mountain come into view together." The phrase "take cover" got its own line, a phrase repeated in the promotional material released today, which fans are interpreting as a more blatant nod to the title of their next album. This seems to be reiterated by Dave's promise of "one of many songs to come".
The stadium stomper was mixed by Mark 'Spike' Stent and mastered by Randy Merrill. Both men have worked with Foo Fighters previously, namely on Medicine at Midnight and But Here We Are.
The cover art was done by long-time collaborator Morning Breath, Inc. with live photography by Andi K. Taylor.
